My Abuelita lives in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico and was taught to crochet and knit at the age of two by her great-aunts. She is highly skilled with the needles and has created beautiful and intricate pieces throughout her life. She was knitting until she turned 94 and had to stop due to poor eye sight. It is something I know she misses very much especially now that she has so many great-grandchildren, including my new, baby girl. Abuelita taught me to crochet when I was five and knit at seven and I have been doing both ever since. I plan on passing on everything she patiently and lovingly taught me to my little girl.
In 2001 I created the label One Tough Monkey, in 2003 abuelitaschango.com, Spanglish for Grandmother's Monkey, was created and over the years I have sold tiki lamps, hats, scarves, purses and waterproof, wool skull caps (for surfers) on the website.
In 2006 the pattern for the Anarchy Irony Hat was featured in Debbie Stoller's book, Stitch 'N Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker. Inspiration arrives via changes in the seasons, trips to Mexico, old movies, The Monkees, roller skating, listening to my record collection, vintage shopping, thrifting on Saturday mornings and on and on.
